@jennawilsonra: In 1939, Kentucky-born folk singer and storyteller Aunt Molly Jackson sat down with folklorist Alan Lomax and shared stories about witchcraft beliefs she remembered from eastern Kentucky. One of the strangest involved her first husband Jim Stewart’s younger brother, Albert, who suffered from what Molly described as “strange fits.” According to the family story, they eventually sought the help of a “witch doctor,” a type of folk healer believed to be able to break witchcraft. What happened next became a story the family remembered for decades. Whether this was an illness misunderstood at the time, coincidence, or something the family truly believed was supernatural, I love that Molly’s own voice was recorded and preserved so we can still hear these pieces of Kentucky folklore today. 🎙️ Original account: Aunt Molly Jackson, recorded by Alan Lomax in 1939 📚 Primary source and recording: Alan Lomax Collection, American Folklife Center, Library of Congress 📖 Additional historical context: Library of Congress Folklife Today, “Aunt Molly Jackson Tells Witch Tales for Halloween” This video discusses a historical folk belief and does not present witchcraft as the established cause of the events described. #kentucky #folklore #witchcraft #paranormal #appalachianfolklore
