WHAT TO DO IF NON-CATHOLIC PREACHERS VISIT YOUR HOME — Catholic Guide & Biblical Wisdom This is a common experience! Here’s a balanced, respectful, and faithful response rooted in Scripture, the Catechism, and Catholic teaching: 1. Start with Respect & Love — They Are Seeking Too "Always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence." — 1 Peter 3:15 - They may be sincere and zealous — even if misinformed. Kindness opens doors; anger closes them. - Jesus said: "Love your neighbor" — this includes those who differ from you. Respect does not mean compromise. 2. Be Hospitable — But Clear About Your Faith "Beloved, it is a fine thing to be faithful… but do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting; for he who greets him shares his wicked work." — 2 John 1:10–11 - St. John is not saying be rude — he means: do not give the impression you accept or endorse false teaching. - You can say: "I appreciate your zeal and your visit. I am Catholic and I love my faith — I respect your beliefs, and I hope you respect mine." 3. Know What You Believe — So You Can Explain It "Guard the truth that has been entrusted to you… with the help of the Holy Spirit." — 2 Timothy 1:14 - Common topics they may raise — and how to respond gently but firmly: - Sola Scriptura? → "Scripture itself commands us to hold to oral AND written Tradition (2 Thess 2:15). The Church gave us the Bible — not the other way around." - Images/statues = idolatry? → "God commanded images in the Temple (Exodus 25). We do not worship them — they remind us of what God has done." - Praying to Mary/Saints? → "It’s asking for intercession, not worship — just as you might ask a friend to pray for you. One Mediator = Jesus; many intercessors = the Body of Christ." 4. You Are Not Obligated to Debate — Set Boundaries "Avoid stupid controversies… for they are unprofitable and futile." — Titus 3:9 - If the conversation becomes aggressive or disrespectful: "I appreciate the visit, but I’d prefer not to debate. Let’s pray for one another instead." - You have every right to close the door politely. Your home is your sanctuary. What the Catechism Teaches "The Church’s relationship with the non-Catholic Christians is characterized by respect. The Church urges her children to be prepared to explain their faith, to live it with simplicity and honesty, and to sustain dialogue with them." — cf. CCC 817, 843 "The duty of universal charity also extends to those who think or act differently from us in matters of faith or practice." — CCC 1829 ✅ Practical Steps — Simple & Clear 1. Greet kindly — you are the face of Christ in your home. 2. State your faith clearly — "I am Catholic, and this is what we believe…" 3. Share Scripture respectfully — show them where the Catholic teaching comes from in the Bible. 4. Set loving boundaries — you don’t have to let them teach you; you can invite them to learn with you. 5. Pray for them — and ask them to pray for you too. The Goal We are not called to win arguments — we are called to witness to the truth in love. If they leave knowing Catholics are kind, respectful, and rooted in Scripture — you have planted a seed. Let God give the growth. DISCUSSION: Have you had this happen before? What’s the hardest question they usually ask? #CatholicHome #WitnessInLove #KnowYourFaith #CatholicApologetics #CFD "Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer everyone." — Colossians 4:6
