The YF-23 Black Widow II lost the Advanced Tactical Fighter competition to the YF-22 in April 1991 despite independent assessments suggesting it had lower radar cross-section from more angles and higher top speed than the competing design. The USAF selected the YF-22 — which became the F-22 Raptor — citing better close-combat maneuverability from thrust vectoring and a more credible production programme. Both YF-23 prototypes survive in museums. The North American XB-70 Valkyrie was designed to fly at Mach 3 at 21,000 metres — above and faster than any Soviet interceptor or missile available when the programme began in the late 1950s. The Soviet SA-2 surface-to-air missile which destroyed Gary Powers' U-2 spy plane in May 1960 operating at similar altitude demonstrated that high altitude was no longer a reliable sanctuary. The USAF cancelled production in 1961 while allowing two prototypes to be completed. One was destroyed in a June 1966 collision with an F-104 during an air-to-air photo shoot. One survives at the USAF Museum. Jack Northrop presented his YB-49 flying wing design in 1947 as the most aerodynamically efficient large aircraft configuration possible. A crash killing five crew in 1948 ended the programme. The conventional B-36 Peacemaker was selected instead. Northrop was shown a classified model of the B-2 Spirit — which uses the pure flying wing configuration he had advocated for 40 years — in 1980 while confined to a wheelchair. He died December 18 1981. The B-2 entered service in 1997. 📸 AI generated images for illustration purposes. #military #aviation #airforce #History #armedforcesfacts
