@smallahmeat: Modern aviation is a masterclass in boundary layer physics. Every surface of an aircraft wears a thin skin of air, and engineers decide how it behaves smooth and laminar where that cuts skin friction drag, deliberately turbulent where that keeps the flow attached against an adverse pressure gradient. Laminar flow surfaces, vortex generators, and careful shaping all decide which regime wins, and where. At supersonic speeds, the shockwave becomes a tool. Inlets place shocks precisely so the air is slowed and compressed before it ever reaches the engine, with movable ramps and spikes retuning that shock system as speed changes. Go hypersonic and scramjets push further, burning fuel in airflow that stays supersonic through the whole engine. Mixing and flame holding have to happen in milliseconds, and if the inlet's shock system collapses, the engine unstarts. Active flow control, with tiny jets and suction that keep air attached, is still mostly at the experimental edge, but it hints at where this is heading. We aren't just flying through the air. We're sculpting the flow around us. #fluiddynamics #mechanicalengineering #aviation #engineering #militaryaviation
