@priscillasoliis: I wish I could go back and show the scared mom in those first pictures who her baby would become. 🦿💕 Aurora was born with fibular hemimelia, a congenital limb difference that can involve an underdeveloped or absent fibula, limb-length discrepancy, and differences in the foot and ankle. The severity and the treatment that’s appropriate can vary tremendously from one child to another. For Aurora, part of her journey included a Syme amputation and a prosthetic leg. I remember wondering what her life would look like. Would she walk? Would she run? Would she be able to do everything the other kids were doing? And then she taught us something I don’t think I could’ve understood back then: Children don’t spend their lives thinking about everything they’re “supposed” to be able to do. They adapt. They learn. They find THEIR way. We’ve watched her go from healing, to her first prosthesis, to learning to walk… and now she runs, jumps, climbs, swims, scooters and scares the absolute LIFE out of me on a regular basis. 😂😭 Her journey isn’t every child’s journey with fibular hemimelia, and treatment decisions are deeply individual. But I share hers because I remember how badly I needed to see children thriving when we were at the beginning. If you’re a parent standing where we once stood: this is what our beginning looked like. My son had a syme amputation at age 2, due to NF1. He played baseball, made the school basketball team. And is now an avid snowboarder. She will do whatever she wants. And I so understand wanting to go back and tell yourself how well it will go when trying to make the decision for amputation.
