I’m never going to pretend I’ve always been a good man or that I’ve always done the right thing. For the first three years with my wife Kate, I could be a shit partner. I’d go out, tell her I’d be home at a certain time, and sometimes I wouldn’t come home for two days. And here’s the hypocrisy of it. If Kate had done that to me once, I probably would’ve left. How fucked is that? Expecting loyalty, respect and consideration from someone while not giving them that same respect back. One thing I want to make absolutely clear: I have never cheated on my wife. Not once. And I never would. But that doesn’t mean the way I behaved was acceptable. About three years ago, I made Kate a promise. I told her I would never put her through that again. And I haven’t. When I gave her my word, I meant it. Loyalty means everything to me, and once I finally understood what I was risking, I changed my behaviour. Kate is my wife. I love her to death. She is one of the most important people in my life. I’m sharing this for the young men and women watching me. You can be a shit person in certain parts of your life. You can make selfish decisions. You can have double standards. But you can also recognise it, own it and change it. If you treasure somebody, treat them like you treasure them. Don’t demand respect you’re not prepared to give. Don’t wait until you lose something beautiful before you realise what you had. Life is fucking beautiful when you learn to appreciate the people standing beside you.
