And just this past week, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, a former Dutch prime minister and a staunch ally of Trump, was able to apparently convinced Trump to pursue a diplomatic path on Greenland. It was at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that US President Donald Trump dropped for the first time his military threats to purchase Greenland, an independent territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. And it is in Davos that Trump met with Rutte and changed his curse on the world’s largest island. Finnish President Alexander Stubb was asked in Davos who or what can defuse rising tensions between the US and its NATO allies over President Trump’s wish to take over Greenland. Stubb promptly responded, “Mark Rutte,” with a laugh, referring to the mild-mannered head of NATO. Speaking yesterday in front of the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, Rutte stated: “If anyone thinks here again that the European Union, or Europe as a whole, can defend itself without the US, keep on dreaming. You can’t. We can’t. We need each other.” He also defended himself for helping ease Trump away from his escalating threats and for trying to lead the American president toward a compromise over the island.  Rutte said: “Of course, I have no mandate to negotiate on behalf of Denmark, so I didn’t, and I will not. That’s up to Denmark to do.” He added about Trump eyeing the Arctic: “President Trump, by the way, and I will defend him now and then this afternoon just to irritate you — no, no, because I really feel that he deserves some defense.” Rutte later said: “President Trump is doing a lot of good stuff, I believe — I know, I’m irritating a lot of you again.” #diplomacy #digitaldiplomacy
