The beach has an owner, and those whose structures were demolished were mere encroachers. The exercise carried out at La Beach was not part of the government’s post-flood mitigation exercise. It was undertaken under the supervision of National Security following a request from the Labadi Beach Hotel, which owns the beachfront. The exercise was, among other things, intended to protect the hotel’s investments and address concerns raised by management regarding activities along the beachfront that were affecting the hotel’s safety, tranquillity, reputation, and the overall experience of its guests and visitors. It is therefore important that the issue is properly understood and not presented as though the demolition was an arbitrary government exercise or connected to the post-flood measures. I believe this clarification should put the matter to rest.
