@failsclipig: Scientists have identified a distinct penguin species for the first time in more than a century. 🐧 The southeastern gentoo penguin, Pygoscelis klekowskii, was recognized as a separate species following genetic research examining gentoo penguin populations. Gentoo penguins were traditionally grouped together, but advances in whole-genome sequencing are allowing researchers to uncover genetic differences between populations that may have been evolving separately for thousands of years. Even animals we’ve studied for generations can still surprise us. Imagine discovering an entirely distinct penguin species was hiding in plain sight. 🐧❤️
