“Toyeba Yo” composed by Franco Luambo in 1975 is a politically charged and socially satirical piece that exposes betrayal, greed and opportunism within Mobutu Sese Seko’s political establishment. Set against the backdrop of the M.P.R. era, the song directly confronts a real-life public servant and fellow M.P.R. member known as Mr. Sidi, portrayed as an informer who exploited his position for personal and political gain. The lyrics accuse Sidi of spying on colleagues and acquaintances, reporting them to authorities and effectively “selling” people for his own benefit. His actions are portrayed as having devastating consequences - destroying marriages, damaging careers and even contributing to people being imprisoned. The title “Toyeba Yo”, meaning roughly “We know you” or “We know your ways,” is itself a warning: Sidi’s activities are no longer hidden. Through sarcasm, accusation and political commentary, the song turns his alleged conduct into a public reckoning. Musically, the performance is particularly notable for Sam Mangwana, who was the main lead vocalist on the song, delivering the narrative with his distinctive, expressive voice, while Franco and the band reinforce the message through their characteristic TPOK Jazz sound. In this sense, Toyeba Yo is more than a rumba - it is a musical indictment of political hypocrisy and the destructive consequences of using power and betrayal for personal advancement. #itschausiku🇰🇪 #sb001 #tpokjazz #rumba
