@dani.josiee: I opted out of my workplace pension at 18. At the time, I’d moved out, had no financial help from family and was BROKE 🥲 I could barely afford to live, so having that extra money in my payslip felt more important than saving for retirement. I opted back in at 20/21 when I was earning around £22k and in a better financial position to think about the future. I don’t regret the decision I made at 18, but I’m very glad I started paying into my pension again as early as I could! #pension #PersonalFinance #retirement #moneymanagement

There is a lot of financial strain on people and love that you are sharing this - I do like this old and broke comment …

I didn't opt in until I was 23 because I didn't get my first 9-5 until then but I think people don't understand how difficult it is for young people right now

I did the same! I was making £400 a month at 17 as an apprentice. Another tip is to find old pension pots from old jobs and merge them together. And adding a beneficiary if you pass way. x

Exactly. I’ve been played out for the last 2 years because I just couldn’t afford it. I’m working to finish my qualification within the next year, and once I’ve got my salary bump, I’ll opt back in - when I can afford it. There’s still lots of judgment when sharing info re opting out so thanks for this!

When I was 18 I tried to opt out as well, but the process was so difficult I just left it. I absolutely did not need the extra money and would have squandered it on rubbish. To be honest, I think the judgement is much more aimed at people like me, than those that actually need the money to live.
