@hfilesen: BOEING 2707 : In the 1960s, Boeing was developing a supersonic airliner designed to fly faster than Concorde. The Boeing 2707 was planned to carry around 300 passengers at roughly Mach 2.7. Early versions used huge variable-geometry wings, but the design was later changed to a fixed-wing configuration after weight and technical problems emerged. Boeing even built a full-size engineering model, and work on a prototype had begun. But rising costs, technical challenges, environmental concerns, and doubts about the program eventually brought it to an end in 1971. Concorde went on to fly.
