Anyone who’s ever used a Smith machine knows it’s lighter than a traditional barbell. Technically, the bar weighs 25 lbs on a Smith machine, but the main reason it feels so much easier is the stability. Smith machines are a more stable option than traditional barbells, and there are pros and cons to this. Stability is great for building muscle. Think of this like a car. If the car is on ice, it doesn’t matter how much horsepower it has. The wheels are just going to spin. Stability allows for the wheels to grip the ground and maintain traction for better results. Stable exercise options allow you to generate a lot of force. In order to build muscle, you must recruit the deepest muscle fibers. This requires you to push yourself to near full capacity, which is not possible with unstable movements. You are simply not going to be able to squat as much weight on a BOSU ball as you will a flat surface. Squatting on a flat surface will be better for building muscle. At the same time, you’ll also want to challenge your stability with exercises like Bulgarian split squats. They will test you in ways that stable movements don’t, such as proprioception and requiring different muscles to stabilize. The truth is both stable and unstable exercises are functional. I recommend using stable exercises to build muscle as well as stability-challenging exercises for proprioception, coordination, and cognition.
