In 2012, right inside the University of Ilorin, opposite the Student Union Building (SUB), a man started selling food from a small kiosk. His name is Ibigbemi Oloruntobi. He had no fancy restaurant, no expensive furniture and no sophisticated business setup. He had food to sell and thousands of hungry students moving around campus every day. His business was simple: serve good, affordable rice to students who wanted a filling meal without spending too much money. That small kiosk would eventually become Item7Go. For years, the brand built its reputation around the UNILORIN student community. It expanded beyond the original spot, reaching more customers around the student belt and Oke Odo. Then 2020 happened. COVID-19 forced universities across Nigeria to shut down. Students left campus, lecture halls went quiet, and businesses that depended heavily on student traffic suddenly had a serious problem. Imagine building your business around a particular community, only for that community to disappear almost overnight. For a food business, that is a serious shock. I cannot say for certain whether the pandemic was what pushed Item7Go to expand into the wider city. But looking at the timing, I think it offers an interesting way to understand the business's journey. At some point, Item7Go moved beyond its original student market and opened an outlet on Taiwo Road, one of Ilorin's major commercial areas. That move meant reaching customers beyond the university community. And it raises an interesting question. Could a business that had spent years feeding university students build the same demand among the wider public? Apparently, there was a market to serve. The brand continued to grow, and now, in September 2026, Item7Go has opened a major outlet in Abuja. Think about the journey. From a small kiosk opposite the UNILORIN SUB to a major commercial outlet in Nigeria's capital. That is a remarkable change in scale. Here is the Street MBA lesson I take from this story. Your first market does not have to be your final market. Sometimes, the market where you start is simply where you learn the business. You learn what customers want. You learn how to price your product. You learn how to manage costs, serve people quickly and keep them coming back. Over time, those lessons can become the foundation for expansion. But expansion requires more than opening another branch. You have to understand whether the things that made you successful in one location can work somewhere else. The students who bought from you around campus may have different spending habits from families, office workers and other customers in a commercial district. The market changes. Your ability to understand the customer must grow with it. This is why I find the Item7Go story interesting. It reminds us that a business can begin with a very specific audience and eventually build something much bigger. So, if you are building a business today, don't despise your starting point. Your customers may be students. Your shop may be a kiosk. Your office may be one small room. That does not mean the business must remain small. Start with the market you can serve today. Build the capabilities that will allow you to serve a bigger one tomorrow. Conquer your first market. Then earn the right to expand.
