@bianca_nobilo: A lab worker in Siberia just died of plague- the disease that caused the Black Death. Nearly 200 people are now isolated. #russia #siberia #plague #news
My question is: Why does Russia feel they need to develop strains of the live Black Death bacteria? 🤔

Even the US still has annual cases of Bubonic Plague. This isn't really unusual

I really wish we’d stop playing with these bacteria and diseases. I understand the fascination with trying to figure out new things that we can do with them, but every time there’s a mistake in one of these labs people die

Around 200 people every year die from plague about 14% of which are usually pneumonic plague, yersinest pestis is naturally occurring mostly in Africa, were flea bites from infected rats occur

It’s true, but this is only dangerous if it has been modified somehow. Plague is caused by a bacteria, not a virus, and is treated with antibiotics

The reason it wiped out almost half of Europe is because we didn't have modern medicine and antibiotics. The bacteria Y pestis is still endemic in several countries including developed countries like the US it is not as deadly now because we have treatment for it
