Stephen A. Smith opens by questioning political and media figures who, for years, warned Americans that Iran was a serious threat and needed to be dealt with. He argues that those same critics are now complaining when action is taken against Iran, calling the change in position “a lack of consistency” and saying, “Hypocrites!” The video then goes back through statements made by several U.S. presidents about Iran. Bill Clinton is shown announcing, “I am formally announcing my intention to cut off all trade and investment with Iran.” The statement establishes that confronting Iran was already part of U.S. policy decades ago. George W. Bush follows by discussing Iran’s pursuit of weapons and its support for terrorism. He says, “Our second goal is to prevent regimes that sponsor terror from threatening America or our friends and allies,” before specifically stating that “Iran aggressively pursues these weapons and exports terror.” Barack Obama then addresses Iran’s nuclear ambitions, saying, “I strongly believe that our national security interest now depends upon preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.” Joe Biden makes a similar commitment, saying, “Iran will never get a nuclear weapon on my watch,” while Donald Trump says, “I will never allow the world's number one state sponsor of terror to obtain a nuclear weapon.” The compilation puts these statements side by side to show a consistent concern about Iran across Democratic and Republican administrations. Smith’s criticism is aimed at people who, in his view, supported the idea that Iran was a threat for years but objected when direct action was taken. The archived statements from Clinton, Bush, Obama, Biden, and Trump are presented as evidence that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon has been a recurring position across multiple presidencies. #Iran #DonaldTrump #ForeignPolicy #USPolitics - @debate.talk.hall
