Because you're supposed to eat pizza with knife and fork not your hands

As an American who’s been to Germany and Italy and gotten pizza in both places, I just feel like it’s a nice convenience to have your pizza already cut. It doesn’t compromise the quality or the temperature to have it pre-cut like some other foods. Especially because using a regular knife is just kind of unwieldy and awkward compared to using a pizza cutter. Yes, it’s dramatic to freak out about it and act helpless when it’s not already cut. But it’s nice to have a fresh pizza come out and everyone can just grab a slice and start eating it. My wife and I got two pizzas in Berlin and walked to a nearby park to start eating. We forgot that Europeans don’t pre-cut the pizza by default so we had to awkwardly tear it with our hands.

I saw a woman talk about it, about how Americans aren't taught how to use a knife and fork properly while we in Europe are given mini cutlery from we are babies.

Being married to an American… he literally had to learn how to use cutlery properly after moving here: fork in the left, knife in the right hand, non of that switching back and forth. I think they are just not as skilled in using knives because of that..

Because most Italians eat pizza w/ knife and fork when in a restaurant. You can still eat it with a hand tho, nobody’s gonna give you the looks. Personal preference.

Der Pizzabäcker meines Vertrauens antwortete auf die Frage, ob er Pizza schon schneiden könnte: " Soll ich dich auch noch füttern?" 😅

In Germany kids learn to use cutlery at about the age of five. So they know how tu use it and it makes literally no difference whether or not a pizza is served sliced.
Whereas in the US -so is my impression at least- nobody really learned to use it at all. Sometimes intuition leads the way, but not always. Of course there is always exceptions.
In Italy it depends on the region and the form of the pizza itself. General rule: individual pizzas are not sliced but if you order pizza as a group they might serve various types of pizzas on big plates. Then they come sliced so everybody can grab a piece.

We learn how to use cutlery from a very young age. It strikes me as an experience that’s largely absent from North American culture.

In Germany it's probably because in a restaurant setting you're bot supposed to eat with your fingers. So it would have to be cut into bite size pieces and that's just silly

Somebody else cuts your pizza? with a dirty knife from the floor? And you do jot even know about it? Never in a million years. U.S.A. is weird really.

Just tell them you want the pizza cut when you order. It’s not an issue at all. 😏

We as Germans are used to use cutlery at any food we eat. We are taught this as small childs with all different foods.

My husband is Italian and lived in America for several months as a young man. He was genuinely shocked that he only received a slice of pizza 🍕 when he ordered pizza. That was in NY many years ago. He always expected a whole (uncut) pizza

I have a feeling this simply comes down to the selling pizza by the slice was the predominant thing as pizza got enmeshed in culture
