@dr_mikem: As a Pediatrician for the last 27 years, I am well aware of what the AAP says about safe sleep and I have been in the front lines of tragic accidental deaths from accidental asphyxiation As a parent of 7, I am well versed in the exhausted decisions we make at 2 am to try and get sleep and manage an infant who needs feeding , closeness and comforting Please check out my conversation with Dr Mona @pedsdoctalk
I told my daughters ped we coslept since day 1. She hated that and lectured me at every appointment. I took it as a grain of salt and continued cosleeping for 3 years. 🤷🏻♀️No one gets to tell me how to raise my own child. ❤️

I had my baby then went home had to leave my baby with daddy to be admitted and almost died from preeclampsia after birth because I was almost too late. My mom came to help and SHE took care of my baby for a whole ass week and she did not listen to me about putting her to sleep in her crib she always had my baby sleeping on her chest so when I got to come home finally my baby would not sleep in her crib at all and I was stuck sleeping with my girl for a whole 2 years on my chest in bed because that’s allllll she would want to sleep. Now she sleeps in her own bed perfectly but my body never let me fully get into deep sleep I was always afraid of Sid’s or her suffocating or what not. Still 4 years later I wake up to the smallest sounds and because of that I now know she also has sleep apnea because my body has me on alert to everything.

I have bed shared with both my boys since they came home from the hospital. I have a 3 year old, and an almost 9 month old. I never heard of the safe sleep 7. when i was in the hospital, they make you sign a waiver that states you will NOT bed share in the hospital OR at home. i refused to sign until they took out the part about home. They were also pretty shameful towards me when i had fallen asleep with my first born while he was nursing, at 3 am after I had just been in labor all day/night. I truly feel that people forget(or just dont care to understand) how a woman's body/mind/soul changes when we have children. your body knows when things change/shift. you just have to listen to it
I for sure do not follow ALL these rules, but my mama instincts are VERY strong. I have made it a point to be sure that there are as minimal pillows and we only have one comforter on our bed. Both of my boys are healthy and growing big

I started bed-sharing at 3months old. I was so exhausted with no help that I fell asleep for a second standing while rocking my son to sleep. I asked for advice on how to safely do it. Changed my whole experience. Since then we haven’t stopped. He’s 3 years old now :) 🥰

I had my twins at 35 weeks. We went home 2 days later, all was well. For the first 2 months, I stayed at my parents house and used those pod sleep cushions and put them both in one crib. After 2 months, in my own home, we used the pods if they were in our bed or bedside bassinets. I would prop them up on pillows to bottle feed them during the night. At 6 months, I put them in their cribs in their nursery. They are 3 now! Phew, I dont know how I got through that!

Mine was formula fed but I slept with him on our recliner. I hated it but it was the only way either of us slept. I was more scared to sleep in bed with him than on the recliner

I never felt comfortable bed sharing with my daughter, because I’m a deep sleeper so I honestly didn’t trust myself. Bassinets exist for a reason 🤷🏻♀️

I was so exhausted with my first we ALMOST had an incident with her on the couch in the middle of the day when we felt fine: thankfully she is OK! I’ve been cosleeping/bedsharing following the safe sleep 7 since then and I’m on my 3rd baby

This is exactly what happened to me - my doc in a condensing tone was like “do I need to talk about the risks” and that closed the convo for me with them about it because I am low risk and if they want to come at 4 am and feed my child after being up 10 other times that night than I won’t bed share but if it’s just me than bed sharing is what allows me to sleeep a few hours

I check all the safe sleep 7, plus we use an owlet .. i’m going to cuddle the crap out of my baby which also somehow translates into my 8 month olds who sleep independently and we don’t have the negatives of sleep deprivation.

My 2nd was born with breathing issues. Would not sleep in his crib and so I was only getting 20 minutes of sleep a night according to my watch. Started bed sharing and my breathing regulated his. It was immediately noticeable. My husband couldn't believe it. He's older now and we don't anymore but I will never regret doing so

We invested in a bed side open bassinet that latches to the side of the bed. Safer and there are no barriers in touching, soothing, feeding the baby.

Thank you for talking about this and reassuring us. I try my best to follow the safe 7 rules, yet I lie to our doctor about my bed-sharing because I don’t want to be discriminated against 😓

Thank you for this. I have bed shared with my 3 youngest following the safe sleep seven. I'm fortunate that my doctor is informed and supportive about safe sleep.
