YAOUNDÉ — Clément Atangana, President of Cameroon's Constitutional Council, has died at the age of 85, according to multiple reports. He reportedly died early Sunday morning in France, where he had been receiving medical treatment for several months. Atangana was a prominent Cameroonian magistrate who served as the first President of the Constitutional Council since its establishment in 2018. He was nominated by President Paul Biya on February 7, 2018, and had been in office since then. Born on August 20, 1941, in Ekouméyek, Ngomedzap, in the Centre Region, Atangana had a long and distinguished judicial career spanning over five decades. He served as a judge and prosecutor in several courts across Cameroon before becoming President of the Supreme Court's Administrative Chamber. Prior to his Constitutional Council appointment, he also served as President of the National Commission for the General Recount of Votes for over 17 years, overseeing legislative, senatorial, and presidential elections. His health had been a subject of concern for months. Reports earlier this year indicated he was hospitalised in critical condition, and he was reportedly involved in a road accident in July 2026. He leaves behind eight children and a legacy as a key figure in Cameroon's judicial and institutional history. #cameroontiktok #SIRTERRENCETV #yaoundecameroun🇨🇲🇨🇲
