To everyone with a voice that matters, who has the power to do something to change the lives of women in Iraq and to make a difference: Please, let my voice reach women's rights organizations. Imagine being born into a life that feels like a prison. Imagine being taught that your entire existence revolves around a husband and child—that your worth is measured by how well you please them, how silently you endure the unbearable, and how much of yourselves you are willing to sacrifice. And then, the very child to whom you have dedicated your life can be taken from you. In my country, women have been given only a tiny space to live as human beings. We are expected to be mothers, wives, and complete complements before we are allowed to be individuals with our own dreams, voices, and lives. And now, even our breath can be taken from us. How much more must women endure before the world listens to us? Please, hear our voices. Please, help us be seen. I wish you well, but Iraqi women continue to hide behind laws, traditions, and systems that were never built to protect them.
