Eyes blue like the Atlantic. #blueeyes #beauty #looks #eyesblue #eyes Blue eyes are a unique human ocular trait characterized by a low concentration of melanin within the stroma of the iris, resulting in a distinctive coloration that is actually an optical illusion rather than the presence of blue pigment. In the human eye, there are no blue pigments at all; instead, light entering the iris is subjected to a phenomenon known as Rayleigh scattering, which is the exact same physical process that causes the sky to appear blue. When light hits the front layer of an iris with minimal melanin, the longer wavelengths of light (like red) are absorbed by the deeper tissue layers, while the shorter wavelengths (like blue) are reflected back toward the viewer. Genetic research suggests that this physical characteristic is highly complex and polygenic, primarily dictated by variations in the OCA2 and HERC2 genes on chromosome 15, which regulate how much pigment is deposited into the eye. Historically, evolutionary scientists believe that blue eyes can be traced back to a single genetic mutation that occurred roughly 6,000 to 10,000 years ago in a common ancestor living near the Black Sea region, prior to which all humans are thought to have had brown eyes. Today, while blue eyes are most commonly found in populations of Northern and Eastern European descent, they remain a recessive trait globally, requiring specific genetic combinations from both parents to be expressed in an offspring, and they often come with a heightened sensitivity to sunlight due to the lack of protective UV-absorbing melanin. - @deloveeeeeeee
