@thelosttwo: SAVE THIS for your trip to El Salvador 🇸🇻🌋 Everything you need to know about hiking Santa Ana Volcano, one of the coolest things you can do in El Salvador! 🌋 Santa Ana Volcano, also known as Ilamatepec, is an active volcano and the highest volcano in El Salvador at 2,381 m / 7,812 ft. Its last eruption was in 2005. 🥾 The hike: It’s considered moderate and takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the top and around 3 to 4 hours round trip, depending on your pace. Expect a steady climb, with the final section becoming rockier and more exposed. 📏 Distance: Roughly 7 km / 4.3 miles round trip, with around 470 m / 1,540 ft of elevation gain. 👟 What to bring: Good shoes, plenty of water, sunscreen and a light layer. The temperature and weather can change quickly, and the summit can get windy and surprisingly cool. 👨‍🏫 You need a guide: Hiking to the crater requires an authorized guide. The official Cerro Verde tourism page currently lists the Santa Ana hike at 8:30 AM, with limited spaces, so we’d recommend arriving early and confirming the schedule beforehand. 💵 Cost: Cerro Verde entrance for international visitors is currently $3 USD, with additional protected area and guide fees for the volcano hike. Bring small USD bills and cash because the various fees are collected separately. 🤯 The reward: At the summit you’re standing on the rim of an active volcano looking down into a massive crater with an incredible turquoise acidic lake below. And one last tip… DON’T GIVE UP! We reached the top and the entire crater was covered in clouds.
