The Mighty Eritrean Navy Guarding the Red Sea The mighty Eritrean Navy safeguards Eritrea’s Red Sea coastline and islands from the Bab el-Mandeb to Ras Kasar. Official figures put the mainland coast at about 1,350 km and the islands at more than 350, with a total shoreline of around 3,300 km. The navy operates about 18 to 23 ships and is among the larger coastal fleets in East Africa. Eritrea also produces its own patrol boats at the Haileab boat factory in Assab. Founded after victory Created in 1993 and long led by Hummed Karikare, the navy grew from the EPLF victory against the Ethiopian army in Massawa in 1990 and Assab in 1991. The Ethiopian Navy was dismantled and forced to leave Assab for Djibouti. Today the force is led by Colonel Ahmed Mohammed-Ali (Wedi Halima), Acting Chief of Staff of the Eritrean Naval Force. Hanish and the 1990s The Eritrean Navy defeated Ethiopian naval power in the 1990s. Eritrea’s navy and army then defeated Yemeni forces in the Hanish Islands, with the army occupying Greater Hanish. A later arbitration awarded most of those islands to Yemen while recognizing Eritrean rights nearby. No mercenaries in Eritrean waters The navy kept Eritrea’s waters safe from Western private military ships. In 2010, British anti-piracy mercenaries from Protection Vessels International illegally entered Eritrean waters, docked at Eritrean islands with military equipment, received fuel, and tried to flee without paying. The navy intercepted them and held them for months. They were released after the company apologized. Pirates, smugglers, and illegal ships Eritrean naval forces keep the waters safe from pirates and illegal sailors trying to fish in Eritrea. An Azerbaijani ship caught entering without authorization—reported by some as trying to move weapons to Ethiopia—was also seized. Support for Sudan The Eritrean Navy has also been involved in protecting Sudan’s coastline. In 2024 ships led by Colonel Ahmed Mohammed-Ali were deployed to the Port Sudan area to support Sudan against pirates, smugglers, and armed groups. Free of Houthi attack Eritrea’s waters have stayed free from Houthi attacks thanks to the navy and the armed forces. Today Eritrea offers the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and the wider world safe passage of goods through its waters, as Foreign Minister Osman Saleh stated in a Middle East Eye interview in Asmara. #Eritrea #Eritreannavy #Massawa #Assab #Redsea @El Hawary515 @macrobian king @liveyourlifefreely @Giz- Giza @Prophet Ace @emperor
