i don’t think people understand why lots of natives don’t “look” native is quite literally because we were almost WIPED off of our own land..

I'm white with noooo indigenous background, but indigenous culture was part of my education and upbringing so I've been to many different ceremonies as a kid and you know what the elders did? Included us all. The best way for us to mend bridges is for us to be involved in indigenous culture and to see how beautiful it is. If we are going to exclude kids especially, you are just encouraging a rift between white and indigenous at a young age which is gross.
The more indigenous language and culture are spoken and shared, the more we can ALL work to keep it alive.
I am not indigenous, but the indigenous heritage is woven into the fabric of my country and it needs to be more predominant in all of our lives and our education system.

That person should look up Scandinavian indigenous people. The Sapmí people. They live in the northern parts of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Indigenous people comes in all shades of the skin tones.

Comments like this are exactly why it took until 40 years old for me to apply for my Métis Status. I stopped telling people I was Métis because the color of my skin immediately determined for them how much "right" I had to live within my identity.

That comment is exactly why it took me almost 30 years to feel like it was okay to connect with my metis culture 🧍

It continues to amaze me just how comfortable people are to stick their nose in somebody’s business that has nothing to do with them. All that matters is the child is taken care of is accepted in whatever community they and their family belong to. It’s none of our business.

My cousin who is registered with our tribe and actively collects money from them, hates to tell people she’s native and gets embarrassed when I tell people I am Choctaw. unfortunately some people keep skin tone so close to their hearts they can’t except the spirit.

I wanted to dance as a kid. I never got into it because of people like that commenter. My MOTHER is literally on the rolls for our tribe. But I am too white passing.

What if someone adopted a white kid, like are they not supposed to enjoy their parents culture?

I get told I'm not Hispanic all the time even though my dad was quite literally born and raised by Mexico and my great grandmother was the last survivor of a native tribe in Tamaulipas. I just share half my DNA with my West Virginian mom and that's all people see 😭

I dong get it. if you say your native they question your blood percentage or say your too white to be native but if you say your (let's say) Irish no one bats an eye. no one asks your blood percentage or tells you you dont look Irish.

Both of my boys are Treaty. Both of them are fair skinned, with blonde hair and blue eyes. My girls are both fair complexion, with dark features. I don't understand why so many people believe that all Indigenous people are olive skin toned, with dark features. So many of us are fair complexion with light features.
