@leavingfaith: If someone who claims to love you keeps hurting you, it’s completely reasonable to question their intentions. Love should not require loyalty in the face of abuse. #deconstruction #exchristian #biblestories #biblestudy
No. You have it all wrong. The only take-away of the book of Job is that you cannot argue with God because “you are not that smart.”

Book of Job teaches us to trust God under all circumstances. We must trust God, even WHEN we do not understand. Or you can look at it from the you don't love me, I don't trust perspective.

The easiest way to describe this is to compare God and Job to Father and son.
If a father let's his son go through pains that he knows will make him better in life. He'll allow him to experience loss and grief, all because there's a greater will in mind.

I believe Job is an allegory, not a historical narrative.. it's even written in poetry! 🤔

I think we hate the book of Job because its communicates what we hate to admit: That suffering does not spare anyone in this life and that God can do whatever he wants and still be just because he is still God at the end of the day and is the ruler and disposer of all things. I am post deconstruction btw, lol.

The last part, “say thank you and be grateful” reminded me so much of how my authoritarian JWMIL raised her kids.

You know what stands out to me about this story? It goes right along with teachings about wives submitting to their husbands no matter what. To me now, all the Bible stories outlines being in a relationship with a narcissistic abuser.

The purpose of allowing that was to prove Satan a liar. Satan said humans only serve God because of what God gives them. In other words, they serve not from a genuine place of love, but out of a transactional type of relationship. Kind of like what many internet spaces today literally tell people to do.
Satan was the instigator here and he was proven wrong because Job didn't immediately blame God and turn on him. Satan was the cause. God allowed it. Its disingenuous to say God was the cause because the whole challenge and action was brought forth by Satan.

Even when I believed I didn’t like that book. No matter what we do god can take it all away because he just feels like it. And we have to take it with love. Fuck that.
