@a__gongju: By the 18th century, taking snuff (finely ground tobacco inhaled through the nose) had become deeply fashionable among Europe’s aristocratic and courtly elite. And because taking out and offering your snuffbox was a visible social ritual, the box itself became an opportunity to display wealth and taste. This extraordinary Parisian example was made by goldsmith Mathieu Coiny in 1762–63. Crafted from three colors of gold, decorated with miniature painted enamels and set with diamonds, it transforms an everyday tobacco container into a miniature work of luxury art. Snuffboxes could be collected, shown off, exchanged as prestigious gifts and made by some of the finest craftsmen of their time, which explains why something designed to carry powdered tobacco could be treated almost like a piece of jewelry. 📍Louvre Museum, Paris #paris #History #decorativearts #arthistory
