@khwafflu: Went to Singha Durbar again and left feeling I should have moved to literally anywhere else in the world except Nepal. That’s the Singha-Durbar-bureaucrat-special. Government change ta bhayo, tara the bureaucracy remains. And somehow, in 2026, you can still be sent from office to office for something that could easily be done online. Inefficiency ko ta award nai dinush Nepal lai. And the laws are not explicit—it changes based on who you are, who you know and who you are talking to. And the way majority of these bureaucrats speak to ordinary citizens is unacceptable. They belittle people, talk down to them, and say incredibly hurtful things—with seemingly no repercussions for how they treat the very people they’re supposed to serve. Singha Durbar bahira gate ma yeuta survey hunu parni where we can rate our experience with these bureaucrats. I requested them to make the processes that have been bringing me to Singha Durbar “patak patak” (in their words) available online. Their response? “The government has to do it.” I asked, “Are you not the government?” 😭 I’m not someone who gives up easily, but man… Nepal ma sachikai kahi nabhayekai kura hudo raicha. I literally gave up on this process two weeks ago. Literally had a breakdown because of the government. Almost two week later, I finally gathered enough courage to go back and try again, only to be met with an abysmal response. What frustrates me is how out of touch these institutions seem to be with how Nepal actually functions—and even more so, how little willingness there seems to be to understand or improve it. I remember feeling this frustration in 2020. It’s 2026, and I still feel the same. And this is the part that frustrates me most: a few good people entering government isn’t enough if the systems themselves don’t change. If the bureaucracy remains unchanged, citizens will continue navigating outdated processes, unnecessary paperwork, and office-to-office bureaucracy just to get basic things done. And we shouldn’t have to tolerate being humiliated along the way. If Nepal wants people to stay, make it easier for them to build a life here. Sometimes it feels like the system is purposefully built in a way that would make a normal person want to leave. Honestly, at this point, I’m praying these dukha dini bureaucrats get a one-way ticket to Lagos. 🥲 Or waha haru sabai lai chittai DV paros. Maybe then the rest of us can finally get some work done.

Yes, you are right. It’s disappointing that they never respect you for your profession or professional experience; instead, they care about which political party you belong to. I was recently treated disrespectfully by the PA of one of the ministers. She was literally giving me lectures about my own profession while openly flattering and supporting a particular parliament member, which I find completely unacceptable. What I have learned from living in Nepal is that sometimes it feels like you either need money or political connections to be respected. But I believe karma has a way of paying people back for what we do . take care yourself and your mental health.

I really don’t understand the disrespect at government offices. It’s as if they forget to become decent human beings, a lady was being unnecessarily rude to my mother at the passport office and when she confronted they got into a minor argument, the lady then idk what she did but my mother’s passport never came, it was to renew and mine came even though we gave it the same day, until today my mother’s passport is nowhere to be found

Malai kunai government office ma kehi kaam parera janu cha bhaney tyo din mero bihana dekhi nai frustration start huncha kina ki those people are so rude (almost all government services). And whenever I try to share this misery with my father or my elder sister, they refuse to believe and say I am over-reacting. The thing is, they being government employees and in good position, they never face this harassment and their work gets done easily every where. But, for regular folks like you and me, almost all government officials of Nepal are a nightmare to deal with.

Ma lamo samaya bahira basera Nepal farkeko manche ho. Every time I go to a government office or hospital for research-based work, one of the first things I notice, whether I’m dealing with the lowest-ranking administrative staff or senior doctor is ther attitude. I take the necessary permissions and pay for whatever service or support I need from them. Yet the way they treat you often makes you feel like they are doing you a personal favor. Professionalism feels almost nonexistent and a genuine helping mindset is even harder to find. Sarkaar ramro bhayera matra ke garnu, manche ko mindset nai change nabhaye samma? System ramro banaune kura garchhau, tara service dine manche ko attitude, professionalism, ra accountability pani teti nai important ho. And honestly, doctors are the ones who get on my nerves the most. They often seem to carry the highest levels of frustration and ego having stayed in Nepal, as if being a doctor automatically ... Maybe medical representatives and nurses would have even more stories to tell about this than me. Perhaps we don’t just need better hospitals or better systems. We also need a better culture of professionalism, respect, and a genuine willingness to help—without making people feel like they owe you something for simply receiving a service they have already requested, received permission for, and paid for. Nepal can be frustrating at times.
