Short vs Long Skins On expedition skis, you can choose between Short skins like Åsnes X-Skins or Long skins that run the full length of the ski. The short skins are what I want to use whenever I can. They offer enough grip to move efficiently while still letting the ski glide. At the start of the expedition my pulk was heavy, so I used long skins. Once my pulk had finally gotten light enough, I switched over to the short skins and LIFE WAS GOOD. Then the next day, one of my teammates was struggling, so I took about 12 pounds out of her pulk and added it to mine. That change was enough to completely change how the skis felt... With the extra load behind me, I didn’t have enough traction. I was slipping backward on small rises, losing momentum, and wasting a ton of energy trying to make the short skins work. It also made every awkward slip feel like an unnecessary risk to my knees, Achilles, and hips. At the first break, I switched back to the long skins... They’re heavier and they create noticeably more drag, so the skiing feels less smooth and takes more effort on easy terrain. But the tradeoff is a huge increase in traction. With the heavier pulk, that mattered more than glide. And that’s the part I find interesting about expedition gear: the “better” option can change overnight. Short skins were better when my pulk was light enough. Long skins were better once I added 12 pounds. The goal isn’t always to minimize resistance. Sometimes the more efficient setup is the one that gives you enough traction to stop slipping, stop wasting energy, and just keep moving forward. #expedition #camping #greenland #arctic #wintercamping
