6 things I’m doing differently in 2026 as a night shift nurse 🌙 1️⃣ Sleep pattern After a night shift, I used to sleep a full 8 hours straight and wake up around 5 PM — only to not feel sleepy again by bedtime. I’ve learned that night shifts disrupt your body clock, and sleeping too long in the daytime can make it harder to reset at night. This year, I’m aiming for shorter daytime nap, so my body can better align with a normal bedtime again. 2️⃣ Meal prepping Night shifts increase stress hormones, which can affect hunger and blood sugar control. When you’re awake at night, your body is more likely to crave quick energy and overeat. Prepping meals that are high in protein and fiber helps prevent sugar crashes, keeps me full longer, and supports better energy throughout the shift. 3️⃣ Caffeine I used to demonize coffee. But alertness at night matters — especially when patient safety is involved. Caffeine, when used intentionally, can improve focus and reaction time. The key is timing and moderation, not relying on it constantly or drinking it too late into the shift. 4️⃣ Hydration Mild dehydration can make you feel tired, foggy, and less focused. Drinking enough water during my shift keeps me more alert. It means more bathroom breaks, but it also helps prevent headaches and that heavy, sluggish feeling at 3 AM. 5️⃣ Movement / workouts As I get closer to my 30s, I realize movement isn’t about aesthetics anymore. They say that sitting is the new smoking. Even light workouts or walks on days off make a difference. I even started to do laps in my unit during downtimes at work. 6️⃣ Mindset I sometimes get pre-shift anxiety and catch myself thinking, “I’m tired. I have to work again.” Anxiety and negative thinking can impact how you work. This year, I want to shift my mindset toward gratitude — reminding myself that I prayed for this job. 💬 If you work nights, which one are you focusing on this year? #nurses #nursinglife #nursesofinstagram #nightshifter #nurseproblems
