Can someone explain this? I never got this concept cause most people don't actually look you in your eyes. When you're engaging in conversation and if they do, the eye contact is typically very fleeting. So where the hell did the rule come from

Maybe we have been brainwashed by powerful men/governments to think eye contact = equals respect when its not about respect but rather control and those in power just want to control us and what better way then to threaten us with their eyes. If you dont match their eye contact then they have less power over us. Just my thoughts.
