@girlfriendofbath: Fitting this debate into a short(ish) video was difficult 😅. Homo ergaster vs. Homo erectus is a paleoanthropology debate where the answer depends partly on what you think a “species” should mean.
Some researchers separate earlier African fossils as Homo ergaster and reserve Homo erectus for the more specialized populations found in Asia. Others group African, Georgian, and Asian fossils together as one geographically widespread and highly variable species: Homo erectus sensu lato.
This debate changes how we tell the story of the first humans leaving Africa. Dmanisi made things especially messy. Humans were already living in Georgia around 1.8 million years ago, and they didn’t necessarily have the large brains, large bodies, or Acheulean technology that older models often associated with successful dispersal.
When two museums give the same fossil different species labels, it doesn’t necessarily mean one is wrong. They may be using different taxonomic models for the same evolutionary evidence. Sources: • Antón 2003, American Journal of Physical Anthropology, “Natural history of Homo erectus”

I love how these are just Homo sapiens or apes yet every scientist wants credit for finding something new so we get all these different names and missing links 🔗

Calling species based on skull formation seems arbitrary because if sexual selection. The different morphology could just be different family groups of the same species. Just like today.

During my graduate school experience, we had lots of conversations about "groupers" vs "splitters" in several fields. I think about it way too often.

I wonder if some researchers might get starry-eyed at the prospect of discovering a new species or variant in a new place. I'm with you. If we don't have enough data about something to clearly define it, we have to leave it in a more general classification.

I appreciate the nod to the genuine possibility of gender dimorphism contributing to possible false speciation labels. It’s my hope that over time we get a larger and broader sample size to work with so the findings are a bit less lumpy. Basing a potential population on a single group is a genuinely probable failure point, and this is especially true if the gender dimorphism is more varied in populations.

This is one of those moments where someone explains something that makes perfect sense and I had no clue what was happening… it’s always a perspective thing. Amazing. Thank you.

Do we think some of these folks didn’t go through our ancestors’ big population bottleneck so they were more genetically diverse?

sorry but for what I have learned from observational science is that is goes against the idea of evolution so that why I can't believe it.

@1. A currently accurate globe has competition from all the other sources of the same information. An out-of-date globe is "a survivor", a keeper of historical information that can no longer be newly acquired. And one made of more than paper mâché is a treasure. . 2. Given homo sapiens sapiens has identifiable variants among different populations, I would agree with you we may be seeing a similar situation in some of these other specimens.
