@veridyngroup: One of the career principles I’ve followed for years is: I’m always trying to replace myself. I know that can sound risky. “If I teach someone else how to do my job, what stops the company from deciding they don’t need me anymore?” That’s a fair concern. The answer isn’t just to train someone else. It’s to keep growing yourself at the same time. Early in my career, I realized that if I wanted to move into project management, somebody else needed to become capable of doing the fieldwork I was doing. So I taught people what I knew. But while they were learning my current job, I was learning the skills I needed for my next one. The goal isn’t to make yourself unnecessary. It’s to make yourself valuable at the next level. Don’t protect your career by being the only person who knows how to do something. Build people around you. And keep building yourself. #CareerAdvice #CareerGrowth #ProfessionalDevelopment #Leadership #WorkplaceAdvice
I always lead like this. For my staff, I ask them their goals so I can help lift them up. I want someone to learn my job, it means I have moved up as well.
