First, make sure your patient fits the Pharmacy First pathway and always check for red flags, including symptoms that could indicate pyelonephritis. Then remember the 3 key diagnostic symptoms: ✓ Dysuria ✓ New nocturia ✓ Visibly cloudy urine 0 symptoms ➡️ UTI less likely 1 symptom ➡️ UTI equally likely to another diagnosis, so assess for other urinary symptoms 2 or 3 symptoms ➡️ Gateway passed ✅ But passing the gateway does not automatically mean an antibiotic is required. Assess symptom severity, use shared decision making and follow the current Pharmacy First clinical pathway and relevant PGD when deciding on treatment.
