My issue is that vets are charging things like $50 each time they check my cat’s blood sugar. You’re telling me it costs $50 to use an AlphaTrak once to test her blood? No, it doesn’t. Because a tube of strips costs $50, so using one strip certainly doesn’t. There’s zero reason a BG check should ever be priced like that. It’s the ridiculous inflation that upsets me. But in the end, I love my cat, so I will continue to pay these prices because I made a choice to adopt her and her life matters more to me than fighting with the vet about clearly inflated prices.

I think people also underestimate our costs that they don't see. Just a box of syringes can be anywhere from $10-20!

If you hear it all day long, that's a clear sign the pricing is a systemic problem, not just owners complaining. $250+ per visit simply isn't sustainable for most people

Don't get me started on the emotional extortion my staff goes through in a daily basis! No business can meet every single client's emotional and financial needs; they also cannot meet the client's needs within the client's time constraints! It's as though realistic expectations have completely evaporated in our world.

I wanna start this by saying I AM privileged to be able to live at home with my parents, however, I paid over 2k in about a month and half (minus outside costs such as food, supplements, etc) for my cat when she got sick, as well as her euthanasia/cremation. I don’t make a lot, I was making about $14 an hour and luckily it happened in summer when I was working more. I never asked them for any money, I had been saving my money and spent almost all my savings on her, and I regret absolutely nothing. Even if I only got an extra month for that cost. I’m only 20, a full time college student, work for my parents, and I pet sit too. When I received my tortoise from my bio mom who neglected him? I spent $400 the very next night after working a double (the vet was 24 hr, I was there until like 1:30 am). I understand that for people who have kids, and a lot more expenses, things can be more expensive, but it really is up to us, the owners, to budget for the vet bills.

I think this is an excellent explanation. Sadly, the people complaining are still going to have the same BS entitlement. Thank you for what you do.

My cat had a seizure last week for the first time ever and she’s 6 years old. I took her to our vet and said do whatever is needed to help her or help figure out what caused this. It’s my responsibility to know and understand that unexpected things can happen as a pet parent and it’s my job to make sure they’re okay and taken care of health wise. If I were to have human children, I would expect the same thing for them.

I feel like this depends because the vet I currently take my dogs to does in fact offer payment plans

I worked as a tech at a Veterinary Hospital for 35 years. They sold out to corporate. Prices were I thought already high and got higher when corporate took over. I left and am working at a privately owned hospital again. Prices are much much better for people. Example the corporate vet hospital was charging $98 for a tube of Claro. Where I work now is $37!!!!

I’m a huge advocate with for vets and techs! They work hard and should get paid well. I do wish more clinics were like yours as you say and are transparent with prices BEFORE being rendered and I wish they were actually more than happy to get an estimate (that is actually accurate). Unless it’s an emergency situation, it is more than okay for work with the owner and try to be conservative with treatment. Growing up there was a vet that my parents used often and he was naturally conservative with funds. He would take suggestions from owners if they were relevant and try cheaper treatments. And I’m not saying some random off the street but in my rural area, farmers specially (and now me as someone with livestock), I know what certain things are, how they work, and more often than not, I know what my pet needs but can’t get the prescription without the doctor. Small animal med is way more expensive than large animal and often things sold for large animals are the same products that are prescription for small pets. I don’t want to pay $50 for something I can pickup at the feed store for $10. And I won’t pay it, I’ll have them knock that off and I’ll go grab it myself. It’s just hard because in the financial place a lot of folk are in in this country constricts people. If they had to pay 20k up front for their own hospital visit or die, they’d have to just die. But in the US, you’ll still get treatment in an ER if it’s an emergency. People don’t recognize that it isn’t the same for animals. Owners and vets should work as a team, not as enemy’s because the common goal is to make your pet better and healthy! I could go on for days and sound crazier than I do now about this issue, but a lot boils down to big pharma and how it’s marketed/ sold.

There are stull extremes. A yearly well visit without vaccines or bloodwork should not cost $135. How about the huge difference between an independant practice and a big corporate own office?

I am a tech in Florida and my clinic. I’ve seen struggle. They just hired HR company for us that’s gonna help the business so I think they’re selling to corporate.

So basically, “I care about animal welfare, but only within the limits of what people can afford to pay.” The fact that people are being priced out of veterinary care should probably be concerning to someone who works in animal care. But instead of acknowledging that there’s a serious affordability problem, you’re saying that people just need to figure out how to pay whatever they’re charged. Nobody needs you to mansplain the service industry. We all understand that services cost money. The problem isn’t that people don’t want to pay for vet care, the problem is *why* they *cannot* afford it.
