As someone who has worked in sustainability and tech transfer I don't see a world in which we aren't using fossil fuels over the next 20 years so drilling in the UK is actually just better for the environment than relying on imports. The tax revenue can then be used for green projects as well and selling green projects to the public is much easier if it's funded by fossil fuel projects. Also will support loads of jobs in the medium term

Even if we don’t drill Rosebank, we are still going to be dependant on Fossil fuels as we are heavily reliant on few products that comes from crude and they estimate will take at 100 years to find alternatives. What makes these products cheap is the sale of all products produced during the cracking process.

the reality is UK emissions are in the grand scheme of things irrelevant. This should purely be a moral argument. I'd say that yes to this is way less of an issue than not commiting to massive investment to upgrade out energy and water network as well as further commitments to nuclear energy

Unfortunately we will in some capacity be reliant on fossil fuels for the duration of our lives. I think it’s smart to, if nothing else, reduce the CO2 involved in shipping the product in from elsewhere and use the money to invest in thinks like carbon capture etc

We should extract them but for ourselves and not the international market. There’s lots of good we can do with this money.

It’s a very interesting question, isn’t it. It’s appealing to the right, certainly. But, its a very popular concept, because most people don’t quite understand how the oil market works. That said, it would generate income, and the UK does produce ~1% of global emission per year. So it’s pretty inconsequential in the sense of ‘damage’. The world produces 100m T of CO2 daily.

The electoral implications will drastically change with current fuel costs. There's a whole lot of good reasons not to - but the simple message that reaches most voters may not address the nuance.

We have the highest industrial energy electricity prices in the world… our energy policy and net zero is quite clearly not working. I don’t know of any countries that have access to oil and don’t use it, makes no sense. I do not see how losing jobs, tax revenue, and making everything more expensive more normal people is “progressive”. Also, we are 1% of global carbon emissions - the idea we can stop climate change is deluded

Why should we import gas from america which we have to liquify first to transport (at great carbon cost) rather than produce our own for domestic use (jackdaw). Regarding rosebank, this would most likely go to friendly European countries for them to refine into petrol products like diesel which in case you haven’t noticed from ur sheltered bubble is at its highest price ever. On top of all this, u don’t sound Scottish and I can almost garuntee u have never been to Aberdeen to see how the decline has effected that part of the country. It obviously won’t last forever but why should we not do this? Other than the fact u think it will single handedly kill the planet 🤣 same thing as thatcher closing down the mines but English people don’t care because it’s out of sight for them.
