This is so beautiful, have you considered submitting this somewhere? It's a very moving poem and I think it would change a lot of people if they read it.

I’ve been a nurse for 36 years. I’m a dinosaur. And this took my breath away. It brought me to tears. No one has ever described this better. The author found the words I haven’t been able to for 36 years. Thank you.

to all the nurses in here - thank you ... those words aren't enough - but I just lost my mom a week ago and y'all were the kindest part of my process - so thank you

After a night with 6 traumatic CPR’s we got one back. I work in a peds level 1 trauma ER. Coming home and using the same hands that were intubating, compressing, ventilating to now tickle my little boys tummy. Sometimes i look at my hands and pause.

It was me… I was gone… my daughter only moments old, my husbands kiss lingers on my forehead, before he took her with him. An emergency C section and I am on the table, elated. Then…nothing. But My doctor wouldn’t let me go, not today, not now, a tiny man, red hair flaming around his scrub cap, standing above me, me a room jammed with nurses, doctors, staff of all kinds. And he refused to let me leave. 7 minutes I waited in the dark, while he fought death in hand to hand combat. That was 36 years ago and I am alive. Every single day a gift that a small red haired surgeon fought death on my behalf and won my life back.

This touched me. My husband kept knocking, and eventually an EMT, and my heart answered. Thank you for all you do. I’m so grateful to be here.

This actually happened to me this morning. As an OR RN I’m with an awake patient for maybe 15 min. They don’t remember my name or face normally. You’re correct, everyone else keeps moving. We turn the room, time for the next patient. I try to always remember there’s someone on the other side of my room desperately awaiting my message that surgery is finished and everything went well but on these days there’s no msg. But we carry these souls with us. They might not remember us but we remember them.

My dream is to one day become a nurse professor, but I know that I have to work in the ER before I’m ready for that position. I’m terrified of what I’m going to see, but I know that being a good nurse, means you see the scariest things imaginable, and keep going.

I puked after the first time I was in a code. Our patient went unresponsive, pulseless... the other RN locked eyes with me and said, "Let's go". I put my hands on our patient's chest, and with the first compression, I felt the ribs crack. The person survived, thankfully. Stabilized in the ED. I went over to the nurse's station, puked, and then gave an injection to another patient 5 minutes later.

Three years ago I worked a man. Never knew his name but knew from the candid pictures on the wall that he was a grandpa. One that laughed with his whole belly and his soul. One who had years and years of photos of him and his wife kept covering walls and you just knew that they’d been up for so long that if you moved a frame the wall color would would appear darker than one thought it would. I didn’t recognize the address on CAD when it popped up two weeks ago but when I got near I knew the house. His wife saw me and immediately changed her demeanor. She just stared at me. Did she hate me for not doing enough? Did she think I did something that gave her false hope that night? Her face softens and she finally speaks “you were here with him”. Yes, ma’am. I was. “He made it two more days. I got to say goodbye…”. I remember pleading with him as I squeezed every six seconds. They need you. I know you’re here. Just come back and we will let you rest. I remember repeating ‘come on’ while I tried to keep up with the metronome on the monitor. He was one of four that I’ve gotten ROSC on. In the last six years… one of four. Only one left the hospital intact. I’ve apologized to every single one. I drive down roads and remember the ones I nodded my head ‘no’ to. I can see their supper still on the table. Their wedding photos. Their dogs nervously panting and pacing nearby. The gut wrenching sobs as someone in the background pleads for me to try harder. Try again. One more time…

This is so incredibly beautiful. Thank you for sharing. My therapist once told me: maybe as an ICU nurse your job isn’t always to save, but to support, whatever the end might be.

death still affects me but I'm still young I guess. whenever there's a death it hits me like I feel cold all over and the smell of it is fear. I can smell fear whether it's my own or my coworkers idk. but I hate that feeling. I hate feeling cold all over and the smell of fear it makes me cry. it makes me sad. but they're right I can't stop just because someone died. there's other people to help and it hurts horribly

This is absolutely phenomenal. Just wow. The hardest part has always been the transition after. The transition back into a nurse who is being asked for a water in the next room.

It’s hard to put into words the dissonance that happens in medicine and all the beauty and the bitter sadness that happens within minutes of each other. You did it so incredibly. I’m an intern resident, only about 3 months into being a physician, but I’ve found myself slowly but surely becoming more and more desensitized to cope with everything. It’s been so difficult. Thank you for sharing 🤍 this was so beautiful.

Retired RN, this made me cry. I remember the first death. I remember the first cracked rib. I remember all the times I had to walk back to my own patients and keep the death off my face.

My wife is an ER nurse. For 15 years. This she knows. This she holds somehow. This made me ache and weep and wish I could lock my elbows, stack my shoulders and knock with her.

I had to stop reading because I genuinely can not have this kind of break down while alone at 10pm, but this is insanely beautiful. I think the idea that it's us knocking, us trying to get them to answer the door, to just come back, will stay with me forever.

I watched as a student nurse my first day of clinicals a code ran on a 45 year old man who his mother found unresponsive first thing in the morning. 50 minutes they tried!! They tried and tried and tried. As a student I stayed just outside the room so as not to get in the way. At about minute 12 I started crying. And just bawled for the next 30 minutes. I Couldn’t contain it. I’ve been a nurse 34 years. That man still lives on with me. So does that emergency room team. ❤️
