If I wanted to help my baby learn to roll, THIS is where I’d start! 👶 Did you know there are lots of little skills that develop BEFORE your baby learns to roll? And you don’t need to wait until they’re nearly rolling to start encouraging them! Here are 4 activities I’d recommend as a children’s physio 👇 ⭐ 1. Crossing midline Gently bring your baby’s hand towards their opposite foot, encouraging them to move across the middle of their body. This helps develop rotation through the trunk and the ability to move their arms and legs across their body — both important for rolling! ⭐ 2. Hands to feet & weight shifting Encourage your baby to bring their hands towards their feet, then gently rock them from side to side. This helps them become more aware of their body, activate their tummy muscles and experience shifting their weight from one side to the other. Rolling involves transferring weight, not just turning over! ⭐ 3. Reaching for feet & abdominal strength Place a small, firm cushion or folded towel under your baby’s pelvis while they’re lying on their back. This makes it easier for them to lift their legs and reach towards their feet, encouraging activation of their abdominal muscles. Developing this strength and control helps babies lift their legs, move their pelvis and initiate rolling. ⭐ 4. Assisted rolling Gently guide your baby through the movement of rolling from their back onto their tummy. Go slowly, giving them time to turn their head, reach across their body and actively join in rather than simply rolling them over. Practise in BOTH directions! Babies learn through movement, repetition and practice. The more opportunities they have to explore these movements, the more familiar they become. 💡 When should you start? You can introduce gentle cross-body movements with tiny newborns! As your baby develops more head and trunk control, you can progress towards reaching for feet, weight shifting and assisted rolling. Most babies start rolling around 4–6 months, but development varies and there’s no need to rush them. Always keep activities gentle, use a safe, firm surface, supervise throughout and follow your baby’s lead. 📌 SAVE this reel to try during playtime! 💬 How old was your baby when they first rolled? #BabyRolling #BabyDevelopment #BabyMilestones #PaediatricPhysiotherapy #LeapChildrensPhysio
