the position of a number of classical and contemporary scholars is that a person who genuinely cannot express himself in Arabic may make duʿāʾ in his own language while praying. There is disagreement among the jurists, but this is a recognized position.
Ibn Taymiyyah (d. 728 AH) said:
> “Duʿāʾ is permissible in Arabic and in other than Arabic. Allah knows the intention and what the supplicant means… He knows the different languages and the different needs.”
Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (d. 1421 AH) was asked specifically about someone who does not know Arabic making duʿāʾ in another language inside the prayer. He answered:
> “Duʿāʾ in a language other than Arabic from a person who does not know Arabic is permissible, both inside and outside the prayer.”
He based this on Allah's statement: ﴿لَا يُكَلِّفُاللّهُنَفْسًا إِلّا وُسْعَهَا﴾ — “Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.”
The Permanent Committee (al-Lajnah al-Dāʾimah), headed by Ibn Bāz, was asked whether a person may supplicate in whatever language he wishes during prayer. They answered that he may supplicate in Arabic or another language according to what is easy for him, and his prayer does not become invalid because of supplicating in another language. They nevertheless advised him to learn and use the authentic Prophetic supplications.
Ibn Bāz himself emphasized that the Sunnah allows a person to supplicate for whatever good he wishes, worldly or religious, provided the duʿāʾ does not contain sin or severing family ties.
The important qualification
This does not mean that everything in ṣalāh can simply be translated into one's own language. We are speaking specifically about duʿāʾ.
So, for someone who genuinely does not know Arabic:
In sujūd: he may make personal duʿāʾ in his own language.
After the final tashahhud and before salām: he may also make personal duʿāʾ in his own language. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Then let him choose whatever supplication he wishes and supplicate.”
Bukhārī and Muslim.
But if he is capable of learning Arabic, he should learn the Prophetic supplications gradually. The
