Anytime someone brings up the efficiency of China i always have to remind them how easy it is to be efficient when you can effectively force your citizens to do whatever you want/need them to do. The US is inefficient because we have freedom of choice

Just out of curiosity, have you ever visited China? I honestly think it’s the one place every American should visit since they’re our biggest “adversary”. But everyone who come back has said that it’s an eye opening experience.

I think one thing the book fails to mention with the “engineer state” is the ECP. How do we know if all of these projects that the “engineer state” takes on are even worth it? We see this play out with the ghost cities, the warehouses of electric cars, the failed belt and road initiative. Sure they can mobilize insane resources towards specific projects but we have no way of knowing if those projects were actually needed, and a lot of times, they weren’t. It’s very sad to see the amount of waste that could’ve been put towards improving people’s lives even further

There's fascinating economic research that show that the key to societies with high and sustained economic growth is strong civil institutions. Meaning, lawyers might not be all that bad after all.

Really fascinating- but many of the social policies you outline are the same in the US. Sounds like the lawyer state and engineer state have the same disadvantages but the engineer state has vastly more upside

China isn’t an engineering state it’s a military state. That isn’t the default state of communism tho becuase I think it could work in theory but it is the only result they’ve had so far due to human nature wanting strong leadership. Maybe it could work or a slightly adjusted system but so far it is too dangerous because people are dumb and corruption is easy with total power.

china can afford lower income taxes because of higher corporate taxes not consumption taxes. also the attitude of the administration and general population is considerably more accepting of homosexuality than the US

I recommend Scott Rozelle’s Invisible China. He’s a prof at Stanford who spent 30 years in china with deep fluency into the deeper socioeconomic challenges of the lesser seen parts of china, with a focus on rural china

I really didn’t understand and grasp the one child policy stuff as well. Policy and theory is different from practice and how it’s done in the real world

You should visit! We are an American family and our kids both learn mandarin at school. We just went there for three weeks to help motivate them and it was a fantastic place to visit. Lots of really impressive things, extremely safe, really affordable.

Western countries like inefficiency in many cases. Such as in the USA where you cannot have a database electronically available of firearms owned by people (due to fear of 2nd amendment violations). This is alien in China and this type of inefficiency can bloat into infrastructure and planning laws in the west

I hope people need to realize that they are building for the future. China has 1 billion people and while their population will grow less, it’s better to have infrastructure now that’s Advanced. Then like New York or it’s 100 years old.

In the US the government is more of a referee that protects the interests of the rich while trying to enforce some level of fairness between the players on the field. In China the government is both coach, referee and player and they also have unlimited access to your bank account and bedroom.

Yeah man they have a bunch of really great engineering projects cause they don’t have to ask anyone’s permission to get shit done, but I guess that’s a double edged sword lol

You could also frame this as the individual versus the collective in a lawyer state the individual has the capacity to be valued over the collective, but in a collective/engineer state, they will sacrifice individuals to complete large projects.
