Remember, this occurred after YEARS of brutal warfare. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and brutally treated American prisoners (and other allied prisoners). Fighting in the Pacific was absolute hell. So I can see why he slept soundly at night. Also, a ground invasion of Japan was estimated to have hundreds of thousands of American deaths. Never view history through our vision, view it through those who participated.

This is something no one talks about. The US was being attack by Japan, but they could only do so much. Pretty much a incendiary bombing on Oregon, an attack on a few coastal targets, including an oil refinery. Even having hydrogen filled balloons to start fires, using air curtains to get them there. Invading US territories and harassing citizens there. The US only drop two bombs to show that they were no larger playing. US prisoners of war, the worst most of them got was verbal abuse by guards, it was only the prisoners who did the mistreatment.
