@cruisinwiththewhales_: A peaceful moment with two of our favourite humpback whales, Ibex & Egret! 🐋 We’ve been lucky enough to see these two humpback whales travelling together frequently lately, and this encounter was an extra special one. Ibex and Egret appeared to be resting, so when we spotted them heading our way, we shut down the boat and waited. They continued peacefully along, travelling right across our bow and giving us an incredible look at these majestic animals. Make sure your sound is on, listen to those blows!! 💨 Whales are voluntary breathers, meaning they have to consciously come to the surface to breathe. Because of this, they can’t completely “switch off” their brain the way we do when we sleep. Instead, cetaceans can rest one half of their brain at a time, known as unihemispheric sleep, while the other half remains alert enough to control breathing and stay aware of their surroundings. #HumpbackWhale #WhaleWatching #BayOfFundy #MarineLife #WhaleEncounter
