@historicalworld25: On June 24, 2002, 58-year-old Bill Stampfl set out with two friends to summit Huascarán, the highest mountain in Peru. During their journey, an avalanche struck, burying the men beneath the snow. Stampfl's body was never recovered — until a group of climbers stumbled upon it last month. Ryan Cooper was attempting to reach the peak of Huascarán when dangerous conditions forced his team to turn back. They decided to take a rarely-used route, and along the way, they spotted Stampfl's mummified body lying atop the ice. He was still wearing his boots, his wedding ring, and a bag containing his ID. Cooper tracked down Stampfl's family, who immediately made arrangements to have his body removed from where it was located 17,000 feet up the mountain. At first, Cooper was disappointed he hadn't reached the top of Huascarán — but now he says, "I wasn't meant to summit. I was meant to find Bill." #rip #deadbody #mounteverest #fyp #mountaineering
