The Troll and The Fur Trade-COOKING WITH BRIGHT EYES As Lower Fort Garry was so close to me growing up in Selkirk, Manitoba it was a HUGE Honor to be granted a 10 Year Security Clearance With Parks Canada in 2014. Giving Back and Paying it Forward is so Important and when it Involves HISTORY, Count me in. It is so IMPORTANT that Children can TOUCH HISTORY, BE A PART OF IT. Jump out of the box of Stale Colonial Books and Viewpoints. I also LOVE HALLOWEEN and when I heard Lower Fort Garry had a Halloween Program, I was in Heaven. They needed someone to Dress up as a TROLL and Hide under the Bridge And Scare people as they crossed the Bridge and entered the Fort area. I WAS IN. So I got into a true TROLL CHARACTER with a GREEN TROLL FACE RUBBER MASK and ripped up clothes etc. I was in My Element. Each TROLL Shift at Lower Fort Garry I drove from my then home in Winnipeg to Lower Fort Garry in Full Costume, driving down the highway. One time at a stop light I pulled up beside an RCMP and turned to give them a wave, the look I got was PRICELESS. I wrote this wee jingle in honor of my Debut as a TROLL at Lower Fort Garry Fright at the Fort. Friday October 10, 2014 was my first night as a most wonderful Troll. The Troll and The Furtrader. Down deep in a dank hollow under a bridge at Lower Fort Garry, Laid a grumpy old Troll with a horrid stench. He crawled in and he crawled out of his dank little hole under the bridge, And frightened old ladies and laddies alike. Then came a Bold Furtrader who was not aware of the Troll, only a terrible stench arose. He did not see the old Troll surface, Along did he come and give him a fright. But what the Troll didn’t know, was the Furtrader held a musket. And with that musket, that Furtrader did fire. And POOF went the Troll. And thus was the end of the grumpy old Troll Who lived deep down in a dank hollow under the bridge at Lower Fort Garry. c. A.A. FROM BLAIR AT PARKS CANADA: Now we have a historical connection between the Troll and the Fur Trade! As you know, Trolls are associated with Norse mythology and Scandinavian folklore but also remote islands, such as Orkney (where many of the HBC employees came from) are closely linked to those cultural traditions too. Here's a excerpt from Wikipedia:
