It is said to be as rare as a blind turtle rising through a vast ocean and placing its neck through a single floating yoke. So too, human life is extraordinarily difficult to obtain. Shantideva reminds us that this precious human state gives us a rare opportunity to cultivate bodhicitta - the awakened mind dedicated to the benefit of all beings. “Today my life has given fruit. This human state has now been well assumed. Today I take my birth in Buddha’s line, And have become the Buddha’s child and heir.” With this precious opportunity comes a responsibility: to cultivate wisdom and compassion, train in the Bodhisattva path, and work for the benefit of beings. “And so, today, within the sight of all protectors, I summon beings, calling them to Buddhahood.” Excerpted and adapted from an English translation of the Bodhicaryāvatāra by Shantideva.
