@4_sync_: St. Francis of Assisi is one of the most beloved saints in Christianity — the 13th-century Italian friar who walked away from wealth to live in radical poverty and is remembered today as the patron saint of animals and the environment. His life Born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, around 1181-1182 in Assisi, in central Italy. His father was a wealthy cloth merchant. As a young man Francis lived the typical life of a rich merchant's son — popular, charming, dreaming of glory as a knight. Two experiences changed him: 1. War and imprisonment. He went off to fight in a war against Perugia, was captured and spent almost a year in prison. He came back sick and questioning his life. 2. A religious awakening. Praying in the ruined chapel of San Damiano outside Assisi, he said he heard the crucifix speak: "Francis, go and repair my house, which as you see is falling into ruins." He first took it literally and started rebuilding the chapel stone by stone. Later he understood it as a call to reform the Church through how he lived. Around 1206, in a dramatic public gesture, he stripped off his fine clothes in front of his father and the bishop of Assisi, renounced his inheritance, and chose to live as a beggar. What he founded He didn't want to start an institution, but people began to follow him. In 1209, with 11 companions, he got approval from Pope Innocent III for a new way of life based on the Gospel — absolute poverty, itinerant preaching, manual work, and service to lepers and the poor. That became the Order of Friars Minor, the Franciscans. Later, with St. Clare of Assisi, a noblewoman from Assisi, he co-founded the Poor Clares for women. And for lay people who wanted to live his spirit while staying in their homes and jobs, he created what became the Third Order. His rule was simple: own nothing, consider all people — and all creation — as brothers and sisters. Why people remember him 1. Radical poverty. At a time when the medieval Church was very powerful and wealthy, Francis insisted on owning nothing, begging for his food, and calling poverty his "lady." 2. Love for creation. He is famous for preaching to birds, taming a wolf in Gubbio, and seeing the sun, moon, wind and animals as siblings. His poem-prayer, the Canticle of the Sun, written near the end of his life, is one of the first works of literature in Italian: "Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Sun... through Sister Moon..." 3. The stigmata. In 1224, while praying on Mount La Verna, he is said to have received the wounds of Christ in his hands, feet and side — the first recorded person in Christian history to do so. 4. The first Nativity scene. In 1223 in Greccio, he created a living nativity scene with real animals and a manger to help villagers understand Christmas. He died on October 3, 1226, at the age of about 44, on the floor of the Portiuncula chapel he loved. He was canonized just two years later, on July 16, 1228, by Pope Gregory IX. His feast day is October 4th. Today Assisi and the Basilica built over his tomb are a major pilgrimage site. Beyond Catholicism, he is admired widely because his life asks a very modern question: what if happiness isn't about having more, but about needing less, and being more connected to other people and to the natural world. #puebloamantedemaria #tojesusthroughmary #orbisonusorans #lordmakemeinstruementofpeace
