@realbraidenshaw: Interest rates were much higher in the 1980s, but home prices were significantly lower relative to income. Today’s buyers are dealing with a very different affordability problem.
Now do the same analysis per square foot ...I get the point you're trying to make here, but you're forgetting something really important... most homes in 1980 were tiny...had one or two bathrooms, + there was no such thing as granite countertops, vaulted ceilings, crown moulding, etc. (not in "normal people" homes anyway). Construction costs have also increased significantly due to better equipment /materials (except lumber arguably), higher costs due to wage inflation and government regulation, etc.
