I hate chess. I hate how a game with only 64 squares and 32 pieces can make me feel like the dumbest person alive. I hate how I can spend an entire game thinking I’m winning, only to realize I’ve been slowly walking into a trap for the past 15 moves. I hate how I can make one mistake and suddenly everything I worked for is gone. I hate the way chess makes you question your intelligence. You can sit there for five minutes, analyzing every possible move, only to make the worst move imaginable. You can feel like a genius for three seconds before your opponent does something so obvious that you wonder how you ever missed it. I hate losing to people who don’t even seem to care. They’ll play some random move, and somehow it’s the perfect move. Meanwhile, I’m sitting there trying to calculate the entire game like I’m solving a mathematical equation, only to get checkmated by a knight that I forgot existed. I hate how addictive it is. I can lose five games in a row and tell myself I’m done. Then I’ll open the app again five minutes later because I know I can win the next one. And when I do win, I feel like I’ve finally figured everything out. Until I lose again. I hate how chess makes you feel like you’re improving, only to remind you that you’re still terrible. You learn an opening, memorize a few tactics, and start feeling confident. Then someone plays a move you’ve never seen before, and suddenly you’re back to square one. I hate the feeling of watching your rating drop. Every loss feels like a personal insult. You start questioning every move you made, every decision, every moment you thought you were playing well. You tell yourself it’s just a game, but somehow that doesn’t make it hurt any less. And the worst part is that I actually like chess. I like the strategy, the competition, the feeling of finding a brilliant move. I like the moments when everything comes together and you realize you’ve outplayed someone. I like the satisfaction of winning a game that seemed impossible. But I hate how much it takes to get there. I hate the endless mistakes, the frustration, the losses, and the feeling that no matter how much I learn, there’s always someone better. Chess is a game that makes you want to quit and keep playing at the same time. It makes you feel stupid, then brilliant, then stupid again. I hate chess. I’ll probably play another game tomorrow.
