@kinacptsdtherapist: Some baby noises in the background of this video I’m leading a webinar on emotional neglect in January that is open to everyone! Tickets available on kinawolfensteintraining.com under events
I’ve never had someone accurately describe my situation until hearing number 3. I’ve always felt like I could never say it was emotional neglect because it was warm and I received lots of love but there was no room for being not ok I always just described it as having a great mother but not a great mom.

My ex is an avoidant, I know it came from her childhood, but at some point you are responsible for your own life, and can't blame childhood neglect in how you act in old age

As a therapist myself, I still struggle that I grew up in a family that literally had all 3 of these.

number 3. the guilt i always felt when i wished my mom was different was because she was nice and i wasnt afraid of her or anything. but she definitely wasnt giving me what i needed. if i had a problem, the most id get was lame encouragement that i could fix or bear whatever it was. she never helped me. and she was so proud of me which i hated because it felt like none of that was because of her help.

My parents were too tired to parent a lot of the time and my sister resented having to look after me so I felt alone to figure out my emotions and life a lot of the time and when I did try to speak up it was often mocked or ignored so I learned to internalize it. But on the outside, we looked like a close knit family.

And in the third variety in particular, that child grows up thinking they had parents who did a great job with what they had, and there's no reason for (me) to feel completely disillusioned with their love. I was loved, when I kept my head down, managed Dad's anger and Mum's anxiety effectively, succeeded at school, and engaged in the interests that were my parents'. It took a lot of sustained effort as an adult to figure out who I am outside of my family.

All three +autism. I became a stone. Too terrified to speak to anyone until I had observed enough of them to give them the exact mask they needed to make them happy. No emotions, no opinions, no personality.

What about 1+2 😅 my mom was emotionally distant. But the whole family was walking on eggshells because she'd periodically explode at my father. I remember my childhood was just waiting for her to scream at my father. Who was meek and didn't really pay attention to us kids. So all I remember was constant fear.

1. Very loving family but a mom and older sibling with OCD. I was not allowed to have negative experiences or feelings because it would trigger their anxiety over my safety

It is really hard to come to terms being in a family 3 because it’s hard to say my parents are bad. They care about me, the do all this outer stuff for me, but during emotional difficulties they shutdown or turn hostile. I learned my needs were to much always.

The way my dad shuts down the moment you mention anything emotional 🫠 like you can literally see his panic to the point where it feels like you’re cornering a terrified animal that’s accidentally come into your house

3rd one hit like a punch to the gut 😭 my mom loved me so much but I was undiagnosed autistic and she was a working single mother trying to keep a roof over our heads. she had so much on her plate and I had such giant feelings all the time. it was a rough mix and thankfully we worked through it but the old pattern sometimes reemerges. its nice to have that feeling acknowledged, sometimes it feels wrong to claim I was neglected when I know she was doing her best

1 was the bad days, 2 was what I considered a good day (not saying it was good, but just what I thought a good day was growing up), and 3 was the public image/mask they wanted to project when they could. There is others, but I definitely noticed all of those playing out at different times/settings. Number 1 though I think was the main constant that I was personally experiencing the most. (Because most days were bad days for me.)

I think I spent a lot of my childhood trying to regulate an alcoholic father, but I don’t really remember anything. But it makes sense
