a good distinction i saw someone point out a little bit ago is that the targaryens were not colonizers but conquerers, not to say that they are better for that obviously but i think the difference is important because the houses of westeros kept their cultures and to a certain extent the targaryens assimilated so they could keep their power. the first men were colonizers tho, with everything that happened with the children of the forest. so sure the short time in westerosi history the targaryens had their horrible moments, but other houses are just as bad and some are worse like the iron islands. so its not good house v. bad house, the books are anti-monarchy at the least that would mean even a northerner or baratheon on the throne wouldn't be better.

The point was that the crown was a fundamentally rotten institution that allowed for no true good to occur most of the time. Daenerys was only able to be so great *because* all of that had been burned away.
