@everyday_dog_trainer: Let’s talk loose leash walking. This is one of the most challenging parts of dog training for the everyday pet dog owner. Just like recall, getting consistency takes a lot of hard work but being consistent all the time is where most people struggle. One of the biggest mistakes I see is unintentionally putting constant tension on the leash. Think of it like fishing: you hold tension, your dog feels pressure, and that pressure creates frustration. The dog then leans into the leash and pulls harder. And here’s where the pattern gets created… If pulling eventually gets your dog where they want to go, and the leash suddenly goes loose when they reach it, your dog learns: “Pull harder → pressure goes away → I get what I want.” And just like that, you’ve unintentionally reinforced the pulling. Loose leash walking isn’t about constantly correcting your dog. It’s about teaching them what behaviour actually works and being consistent enough that they understand the rules. My 14 weeks puppy’s always seem a little scared when on walks which I can understand but it means because she’s in that state of mind she has trouble listening to me at time so pulls on the leash. How would you go about teaching loose lead as she’s does pretty well at home

This is what we're struggling with the most with our 18 month old Cocker Spaniel. He's starting to understand lead pressure but we don't know how to stop him shooting out in front of us on walks 😢

Do you have any tips for a dog who used to love all dogs and suddenly they become reactive to new dogs and you don’t know if it’s off leash as well because you don’t want to test it
